Nano-enabled materials for healthcare applications

Bacterial infections are an increasing threat to global public health causing an enormous medical and financial burden. The inherent limitations of conventional medical materials and devices turned the focus to nano-enabled materials, which open a new avenue of applications improving the effectivity of the current therapies. The nanotransformation of conventional antibiotics, by sonochemistry, represents a second life for otherwise ineffective bactericidal agents due to the appearance of antibiotic resistance. Within the same context, nanoparticles (NPs) offer an excellent platform to accommodate different antibacterial components with low potential for resistance development such as, enzymes, biopolymers or metals.
In this sense, antimicrobial hybrid metal-enzyme nanoaggregates of enzyme α-amylase and silver have been generated for elimination of bacteria and their biofilms. Similar antibacterial efficacies have been achieved through layer-by-layer coating of inert NPs with antifouling and bactericidal biopolymers. In another coating approach, ultrasound has been applied to embed the aforementioned antibacterial components on different materials such medical textiles, catheters and contact lenses for the control of bacterial colonisation. NPs have been further used as structural and functional components in antimicrobial hydrogels and polyurethane foams. Finally, nano-enabled materials have been used in diagnostic devices, for colorimetric detection of bacteria on surfaces and for electrical monitoring of virulence factors secreted by bacterial pathogens.
