Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-8: Control of particle size, and shape and its self-assembly


This study aims to bring new insights on the controlled manipulation of metal-organic framework (MOF) materials with nano-scale precision and its consequences in the final properties and applications. Here, we formed a bridge between MOFs and nanotechnology; which means, linked the classical bulk properties of MOFs with novel functions that can arise upon the manipulation at the nano-scale. We demonstrated that zeolitic-imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), which is one of the mostly studied MOF in the literature, can be engineered at the nano-scale by synthetic and post-synthetic approaches. We exploited the anisotropic nature of ZIF-8 crystals to do top-down and bottom-up shaping of colloidal particles in different architectures and compositions. These engineered particles can be used in different applications (e.g. cascade catalysis). Also, highly monodisperse ZIF-8 particles were synthesized and used in the 3-dimensional self-assembly of ordered superstructures that can behave as photonic crystals.
