Tailoring the structural and electronic properties of graphene by bottom-up methods

Abstract:

Bottom-up methods can be an effective way of tailoring the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of graphene. At the nanoscale, these can dramatically depend on atomic scale variations in size and boundary structure.

In this thesis we studied different bottom-up strategies: (i) nanostructuring by the CVD synthesis of graphene nanoislands with controlled shape, internal domain distribution and edge structure; (ii) proximity-induced modification of the structural and electronic properties of graphene by metal intercalation; (iii) lateral interfacing to hexagonal boron nitride to form hybrid 2D materials. We use scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS) to characterize the system, and combine our experimental results with ab-initio calculations. The thesis provides valuable notions for the realisation of shape-selected graphene quantum dots with tailored properties for applications in optoelectronics and spintronics.
