Solid-state electrolytes for next generation Li batteries: the challenge

Short abstract:

Solid electrolyte-based Li metal batteries hold the promise to boost the performance of conventional Li-ion technologies; being capable of storing 2-3 times more energy as well as being safe from combustion. However, the highly reactive and resistive interfaces between the solid electrolyte and the electrode material are a major limitation for practical application.


This presentation will show the study of 3 types of solid electrolytes, i.e. 1) ceramic Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO), 2) polyethylene oxide (PEO) and 3) ceramic-polymer composites (LLZO-PEO). Special attention will be given to Li+ transport phenomena and electrodeposition properties at the interface with Li metal electrodes. A thorough characterization, performed at multiple length scales, lead to the identification of key interfacial processes that play a role in the final battery performance. The fundamental knowledge generated offers new opportunities and design rules for solid electrolytes to be successfully implemented in next generation solid-state batteries.
