Single Site Catalysis in Metal-Organic Frameworks

Short abstract:

Metal-organic Frameworks (MOFs) are being actively pursued as heterogeneous catalysts. However, assessing where reactions takes place (i.e within the pore voids or on the surface of the material) is not always trivial. We have recently used post-synthetic metalation as a strategy to incorporate homogeneous catalysts into vacant coordination sites lining MOF pores. This metalation procedure is carried out quantitatively and without appreciable loss of crystallinity. Accordingly, we are able to examine the products of ‘single site’ catalytic reactions within the MOF via single crystal x-ray crystallography. This has provided deep insight into the novel chemistry that occurs within the nano-sized pores of the framework and will undoubtedly lead to the design of more effective catalysts.
