Alkane separation by adsorption on soft porous materials

Short abstract:

The selective separation of gases/vapors possessing very similar physicochemical properties involves energetically costly distillation processes. Alternative separation processes based on shape selective molecular sieving, taking place on porous frameworks (or membranes), are less energy demanding but require an optimal balance between selectivity and diffusion kinetics (permeability). Herein, we report two different approaches to achieve selective separation of mixtures of hydrocarbons. The first one is the formation of a metal organic framework possessing a hierarchical pore structure1 and the second type of material is diamondoid non-covalent porous material. The optimal combination of soft molecular crystal, pore size and functionality leads to high adsorbate diffusivity and low adsorption energy allowing the fast and low temperature resolution of mixtures of hexane isomers and benzene/cyclohexane mixtures.
