Improving the performance of an all-Si based thermoelectric micro/nanogenerator

Abstract:

This thesis presents the development of a thermoelectric microgenerator (µTEG) with the aim of powering low power wireless sensor nodes for Internet of Things applications. The proposed µTEG is fabricated by means of silicon micromachining technologies and makes use of silicon (Si) and silicon/germanium (SiGe) nanowire (NW) arrays as thermoelectric material. Specific technological routes are designed to increase the power density of the µTEG. Particularly, this thesis has been focused on increasing the power density through i) thermal and electrical optimization of the thermoelectric microplatform, ii) integration of a heat exchanger on the proposed µTEGs.
