Advancing Cell-based Measurements in Microfluidic Systems with Electronic Tools - Dr. Darwin Reyes.

 

Short abstract:

Microf luidic devices have demonstrated numerous advantages and capabilities that conventional tools cannot compete with. From f ine control over small sample volumes (pL to nL) to f ine control over cellular microenvironments, the promising future of this technology include advances in areas that span from basic and applied research in biology, to diagnostic tools and personalized medicine. Integrating functionalities to microf luidic devices, such as electronic components, is not only convenient due to its ease of miniaturization, but also provide the devices with enhanced capabilities. We have developed single and multilayer microf luidic platforms with integrated electronic manipulation and measurement functionalities to generate cell co-cultures and study cell migration. The cell co-culture generated creates an environment not easily attainable with conventional systems as is the Boyden chamber. In addition to the cell co-culture system, a cell migration platform where cells are optically and electronically monitored, in real-time was assembled and tested. This microf luidic platforms promises ample possibilities in the future for fundamental and applied research in cell biology as well as other areas such as diagnostics, personalized medicine, and tissue engineering.
