Angstrom-resolved Metal-Organic Framework-liquid interfaces

Short abstract:

Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) are a class of crystalline materials with a variety of applications in gas storage, catalysis and drug delivery. The optimization of those applications requires high-resolution images of MOF structures in relevant environments. Amplitude-Modulation Atomic Force Microscopy has been applied to follow dynamic processes at the MOF-liquid interface. We provide Angstrom-resolved AFM images of a Ce-RPF-8 MOF surface immersed in glycerol. Moreover, we follow with a time resolution of about 1 frame/minute, the dissolution process of the MOF surface in glycerol with atomic details. A relationship between the dissolution rate and the force applied by the tip to the MOF surface is shown. Differences between water and glycerol as the AFM imaging liquid environment are discussed.
